Because
of Scott's close relationship to the Oklahoma State Basketball team
and head coach Eddie Sutton, he became friends with many of the
players. One of his favorites was Cory Williams who went on
to play for a brief time in the NBA with the Chicago Bulls.
During that time, Scott visited Cory both in Chicago and while the
Bulls were on the road. (photo of Corey w. and Sc)
While attending some games
in St. Petersburg, FL, Cory invited Scott to the locker room where
he met Michael Jordan. Michael probably doesn't even remember
this meeting because he was at the time and still remains a legend,
but to Scott it was a very special day. Having taken nothing
with him to have signed, Scott stuck a shoe in the face of the hero
(a Michael Jordan...............). Fortunately, he asked for
the signature on the foot which was prosthetic so it didn't endure
much bending, flexing, and other form of "wear and tear".
However, Scott did continue to wear the shoe. One day in passing,
a stranger asked him, "Aren't you afraid someone will cut off
your foot to get to that shoe?" Scott replied casually,
"Too late!", showing the man his artificial limb.
The shoe is now a part of Scott's collection currently on display
at Disney's Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando.
Later Scott wrote to Michael
Jordan on a couple of occasions. He never received a reply
from the hero himself, but Scott was just as happy with responses
from the Michael Jordan foundation. One reply that he did
receive told a lot about this man. Scott had written to extend
his condolences after the death of Michael Jordan's father.
The foundation replied by saying that most people, even youngsters
who write to M. Jordan are writing because they are asking for something.
The letter commended Scott for his caring attitude and thanked him
profusely for extending an encouraging word to Michael Jordan.
One trip to Chicago to
watch the Bulls ended up being quite an adventure. On the
airplane Scott met a Chicago man who gave him directions to all
of the local sites where the movie Home Alone had
been filmed. Scott knew all about this movie and was most
interested in trying to meet Chris Columbus, the director.
He had photos taken at several locations, the most memorable one
being in front of Kevin's house with Scott assuming the classic
"home alone pose". (show photo)
One night (still in Chicago)
while Scott's Dad was in the shower, Scott picked up the phone and
called his Mom back in Tulsa. "Mom", he whinned, "He
won't even let me call Oprah!" Scott was certain that
if he could meet Chris Columbus, Chris would want to make a movie
of Scott's life and just as certain that Oprah would not only want
to get to know him but would invite him to be on her show.
Scott thought having cancer made him a celebrity. |
